Equity and Inclusion

Black Lives Matter. H+W unequivocally condemns racism in all forms, and we stand in solidarity with the Black Community in the fight for justice and equality. Like many of you, we have been doing some deep thinking on race and equity. In general, yes – but, specifically as it relates to the profession of architecture. We, as architects, are often white and male. 

Hub + Weber is making a commitment to amend the proportions of and representation within our profession. It is not enough to react with outrage. We must be proactive. We must make systemic changes to how we live, how we work, who we know and the voices we listen to. 

As an office we have collectively researched and shared our thoughts regarding the status of diversity and equity in our personal and professional lives. We understand the long and intimidating journey starts with small steps. But we are excited for the journey and growth that will come from it.

What we have done – the easy stuff

  • We have read and continue to learn about how to have conversations about racism, recognizing the characteristics of white supremacy culture, recognizing historic systematic oppression of black, indigenous and people of color, how space and architecture protect positions of power, how the design process differs in black and white cultures, how we can be (are) racists without realizing it and the difference between not being a racist and being anti-racist to summarize.

  • We have diversified our social media, so it more accurately reflects our community.

  • We have sent financial support and gratitude for the work our friends that are doing valuable work in their communities. Organizations like:

  • We have sought out and supported businesses owned by BIPOC.

  • We have joined National Organization of Minority Architects as a President’s Circle member.

  • We are active in the local NOMA chapter.

  • We’re a part of the AIA JEDI leadership.

  • We have hosted the H+W Presents: Pathway to the Profession - Latin Edition.

What is in progress – harder stuff

  • We are reaching out to BIPOC communities to assist with Design/Planning, Printing/Graphic Design and Planning/Rendering for their projects. 

  • We are working with Cincinnati AIA Chapter on issues of equity and inclusion including the development of a local model of Southern California AIA’s Challenge for Diversity as well as programmed presentations that speak to these issues. 

  • We are committing to make our staff more diverse by reaching out to BIPOC communities and businesses, NOMA, state and regional Historically Black Colleges and Universities for staff, co-ops, and interns. 

  • We are reaching out to local educational institutions, NOMA and HCBU’s to provide professional mentor-ship and pathways to architecture/design/construction fields. 

  • We are committed to being purposely inclusive in our events – reaching out to diverse communities.

  • We’re doing pro-bono work in Camp Washington, the Eastside neighborhood of Covington, and for the Esperanza group.

The hard ongoing journey

We are going to recognize our inherent bias, be diligent and do the work to check our bias. Always. 

  • We will commit ourselves to understand that bias applies to everyone – races, cultures, gender, religion. 

  • We will commit ourselves to understanding that inclusion is not the same as equity. That diversity is not the same as equity. And strive for equity. Always.

  • We hope to offer scholarships to those we encounter seeking to continue education in architecture or construction. 

  • We will seek diverse and equitable representation of all stakeholders and communities in the design process. 

  • We will support our staff in being their authentic selves.

Small business struggles (what we’re trying to overcome)

  • Time commitment to really devote the amount of time this movement needs against the needs of the firm.

  • The inexperience balance.

  • Lone representative (no one wants to be the sole BIPOC person in the office).
